With Eye-witness and Commander of vessels involved in the battles of Tsushima and Matsushima 17 pages of introduction and prelims and 306 pages with an advert leaf at end. 57 full page photo plates and illustrations and illustrations in the text showing the times and phases of the battles. Green pebble cloth with gilt circular motif embossed on cover. Gilt tiles on the spine, some foxing due to paper used on title and last leaves of index pages and top edges of some pages, text not affected and very good Large quarto. 1906. The half title has an inscription "With the kindest regards to Harry Smith Esq J. H. Dickenson, May 1907. This is one of the two translators into English. * NOTE: On the History: Fought in 1905 in the Russo-Japanese war, it was an overwhelming victory for theJapanese and the writer a Russian Naval Commander had for a number of years criticised his superiors about their navy and caused them serious embarrassment. He had been imprisoned and stripped of all rank at the time of this battle and given command of a gun-boat not involved in the battle. It was the largest and most decisive battle fought at sea since Trafalgar and was the last naval battle of the old rules of war where a fleet surrendered at sea, with a damage ratio of about 80%. It was the first battle where radio played a role and marked the last sea battle of the old school type ever to be fought. Association copy.

    First Edition. Publisher's blue cloth wirh white lletering to the spine and front board, with the Russian Imperial crest also on the front board.Translated from the French text by L.J.H. Dickinson. vi, 281 pages, plus 2 pages of ads. Illustrated with 5 plates. The book is rubbed and the spinal lettering is faded. There is a short split in the cloth at the head of the spine of about 1 cm, and another about the same at the foot of the spine. The corners are bumped inwards and the cloth is also worn at the corners. There is foxing at the page edges, and also on the early and final pages of the book. Owners name stamped on the endpapers, front and rear. Overall a fair copy.
