This early description covers the author's travels in Zanskar, Lahaul, Baltistan, Ladakh and the Changchenmo valley. The author was granted permission to travel to and explore the western and central-most areas of Tibet. Basically from Leh in his 1903 journey, when he surveyed and mapped areas hitherto unexplored. In the autumn of 1903, he was attached to the Younghusband mission in Peshawar, lather they crossed in to Tibet during a December trek and reached Lhasa by August 1904. * Rawling joined the Younghusband mission which brought a treaty which agreed for trade between Tibet and the United Kingdoms, it was signed in Gyantse. Thus the "Opening of Tibet" was officially established. * Since the region was barely known in the west, Rawling was appointed to head a secondary expedition to explore Garkok, Gyantse ant that region of Tibet and provided many of the early details of this little know area.
