Pictoral frontis; 33 pages of B/W plates from photographs, folding map at rear. Textblock show some foxing throughout, not intrusive. A tight copy; plates clean and bright. very good Account of a scientific expedition to the inner highlands of New Guinea, undertaken by members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Rawling was called upon to organize the expedition due to his considerable experience exploring Tibet. Scarce with map intact.

Some of the plates are a little loose including the frontis and it appears some plates have been detached in the past and glued neatly in again, however, the plate to p.162 is missing unfortunately. The map is in good condition with slightly dog eared edges and a small tear where it attaches to the page.

Original endpapers. Frontispiece. 55 black and white illustrations. Two folding maps. A very clean tight little used copy of a very scarce title. Early in 1903 the author explored Central Tibet & then in 1904 he explored & surveyed from Lhasa to Simla as a detachment of Younghusband's Tibet mission in 1904. This early description covers the author's travels in Zanskar, Lahaul, Baltistan, Ladakh and the Changchenmo valley. The author was granted permission to travel to and explore the western and central-most areas of Tibet. Basically from Leh in his 1903 journey, when he surveyed and mapped areas hitherto unexplored. In the autumn of 1903, he was attached to the Younghusband mission in Peshawar, lather they crossed in to Tibet during a December trek and reached Lhasa by August 1904. * Rawling joined the Younghusband mission which brought a treaty which agreed for trade between Tibet and the United Kingdoms, it was signed in Gyantse. Thus the "Opening of Tibet" was officially established. * Since the region was barely known in the west, Rawling was appointed to head a secondary expedition to explore Garkok, Gyantse ant that region of Tibet and provided many of the early details of this little know area. A very collectable copy of the book.
