Son sang, recueilli dans deux ampoules, se liquéfie de façon miraculeuse trois fois par an. En 1527, un contrat insolite est passé entre le peuple de Naples et le saint. En échange de sa protection contre les éruptions du Vésuve et la peste, le peuple s'engage à lui construire une chapelle et à lui constituer un trésor. Celui-ci est administré par la Députation, une institution laïque. Les plus importants chefs-d'oeuvre réalisés et accumulés au cours des siècles sont montrés pour la première fois en dehors d'Italie au musée Maillol à Paris.
