Son sang, recueilli dans deux ampoules, se liquéfie de façon miraculeuse trois fois par an. En 1527, un contrat insolite est passé entre le peuple de Naples et le saint. En échange de sa protection contre les éruptions du Vésuve et la peste, le peuple s'engage à lui construire une chapelle et à lui constituer un trésor. Celui-ci est administré par la Députation, une institution laïque. Les plus importants chefs-d'oeuvre réalisés et accumulés au cours des siècles sont montrés pour la première fois en dehors d'Italie au musée Maillol à Paris. Le collier de San Gennaro, spectaculaire assemblage de bijoux regroupant les dons d'illustres souverains ; la mitre du saint, réalisée en 1713, recouverte de diamants, rubis et émeraudes ; le reliquaire du sang du martyr en vermeil du XIV? siècle, oeuvre d'orfèvres angevins, ainsi que des objets liturgiques somptueux, d'or et d'argent ornés de pierreries et de corail, en font l'une des plus grandes collections de joaillerie au monde. De nombreux bustes et statues en argent, réalisés par les plus importants sculpteurs et orfèvres de l'âge baroque, sont entourés de peintures par Luca Giordano, Le Dominiquin, Solimena. Trois éruptions du Vésuve peintes par Volaire placent cette collection dans son extraordinaire contexte, raconté dans cet ouvrage par huit auteurs italiens et français.
