[ii], [1], 2-98 pp. This volume is a collaboration between writer, Langston Hughes, and photographer, Roy DeCarava. In 1952 DeCarava became the first black photographer to receive the Guggenheim Fellowship. He would spend the next year taking over 2000 photographs of the people of Harlem. The idea for this work came from Langston Hughes, when, looking for advice as a young artist, DeCarava brought Hughes a selection of his photos. Hughes is quoted as having said, "We've had so many books about how bad life is, maybe it's time to have one showing how good it is." Simon and Schuster rejected a version of the project that was just photos, however, liked the idea of Hughes writing a story to accompany them. Hughes, accepting their terms, told DeCarava that he didn't wish to know anything about the people in the photographs; he "knew them already, although [he] had never met them." The work was both a critical and commercial success though Hughes and DeCarava wouldn't see much monetary success from it, sadly. .
