A proud, and capable looking team of professional riders. "Cowboys were called upon again in 1899 when Britain (and thus Canada) became involved in the Boer War. The Boers, or Afrikaners, were a unique type type of enemy an army of prairie (veldt) ranchers who fought guerrilla-style on horseback. Their logical counterparts were Canada's mounted police and cowboys, and in 1900 Donald Smith, better known as Lord Strathcona, raised a mounted company of 400 men from western Canada, half from the NWMP and half from the horse and cattle ranches. Based in Calgary, and under the command of Col. Sam Steele, they were called the Strathcona Horse." see p. 27 "Shooting Cowboys - Photographing Canadian Cowboy Culture 1875-1965" by Brock Silversides (1997) Fifth House.
