Paperback. Condition: VG. From the Foreword: FAIR READER, let me make a confession. I think it is worth while knowing. While I was editing the Lithographers' Journal, I had to read up on many subjects, principally on lithography. Reading about Senefelder and his varied life, somehow I received an inspiration. This inspiration I fondly nursed until it had ripened into an irrestistable desire to write a book on Senefelder myself . . . well, here is the result. It is the great unselfish human interest associated with Senefelder's life and work which moved me to write this book. Don't be misled, it is not a love story which is contained between these two covers. Even so, I venture to say, that you will find here a story which has all the elements of character which one can't help admire. You will find yourself drawn into reading the story with a tenderness of feeling, with a deep sympathy. Whoever can read with a clear open mind will find a story so filled with human emotion, outgrowing sadness and still joy, filled with incidents of defying imagination. Verily, Senefelder represents a type of greatness in modern history which cannot possibly be understood without a deep and sincere study of his character.' Nay, knowing Senefelder, his true life and work affords one an inside view of lithography which can not fail but -exert a tremendous mental influence upon his humble followers. Let it not be forgotten, that lithography has been looked upon as a mystery for many decades, by the uninitiated world, in very much the same manner, Senefelder's psychiology has remained the wonder of the world. Indeed, when hardships, disappointments and delusions toss one's fate and ambition so mercilessly as was experienced by Senefelder, the father of lithography, yet keeping up hope, courage and without losing faith through a determined will, without forsaking the seemingly sinking boat of fate and destiny, then surely, we are confronted with a character of singular and extraordinary strength, a character who wittingly and defiantly faces the cold struggle of "To be or not to be.'1 That character we have in Aloys Senefelder. Undoubtedly, life becomes dearer to one, as we pay with our own experience, exactly so with lithography. Lithography too will become dearer to us as we begin to more and more grasp the significance of Aloys Senefelder, the great inventor. Thus, let us try to understand our grand old master. . . The Author. 216 pages.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Small 4to, original printed wrappers, paginations vary. An incomplete run of approximately 225 individual issues of this trade journal, many of them with attractive chromolithographed covers. The collection was formerly owned by Walter L. Meacham, of Westfield MA, and it includes some related printed ephemera. Likely, for this early 20th century era, one of the most attractively printed trade union house organs in America. The ATF Catalogue III, page 1,486, has a cryptic reference to this title, which may be easily confused with another such, from the 1890's, from Philadelphia. NOT IN BIGMORE & WYMAN. NOT IN ST. BRIDE CATALOGUE. WorldCat lists numerous library holdings in varying states of completeness, and the presence of the glorious printed wrappers on those is entirely unclear. All of these are generally in Very Good condition. N.B. - This is a heavy volume of issues, with a fair amount of bulk. Postage will be decidedly extra.
