Although it does not state so explicitly, Froude's entry in the Oxford DNB appers to suggests that the Margaret Froude who edited his work after his death was the same daughter as the Georgina Margaret Froude (1850-1935) who married William Mallock. 1p, 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. Addressed to 'Dear Madam' and signed 'Margaret Froude'. She cannot alter the opinion that she expressed to 'Mr Longman' (the London publisher). She considers it 'unjust to an author to quote passages without their context which, when standing alone are unworthy of his other writings'. The writings of 'Mr. Carlyle' are 'full of beautiful passages relative to your subject', and she hopes it will be easy for the recipient to find 'others to take the place of the two to which I take exception'.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches: With Elucidations. By Thomas Carlyle In Two Volumes. Included with the Supplement to the first edition. DESCRIPTION: London, Chapman and Hall, 1845-46. 3 volumes, octavo, pagination: xii, 522, [1]: xiv, 691 :viii, 224, with publishers' catalogue dated October 1845 inserted at the end of volume 2 and June 1846 at the end of volume 3, portrait frontispiece of Cromwell in volume one, original blind-stamped grey-black cloth. FIRST EDITION of a major history study and scholarly edition by Carlyle, who had become somewhat obsessed with restoring Cromwell's reputation. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO JOHN WELSH, paternal uncle of Jane Welsh Carlyle, and a close family member of the Carlyle circle - vide Jane's letters to him. 'Carlyle began writing with Cromwell in mind in 1840 but did not settle on Cromwell's letters and speeches as the focus of a book until late 1843.During the spring and summer of 1845 Carlyle added many annotations full of commentary and narrative to the gathering, which in effect became the biography that he wanted to write. The publication of the first edition helped turn up a large number of additional letters which Carlyle incorporated into a second edition published in June 1846 [here included in the supplementary volume].The book influenced the Transcendentalists and permeated popular American culture.' It "remains one of the most important works of British history published in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries." [David Amigoni]. Presentation copies of Carlyle's works to members of his family circle are now very scarce. Inscribed by Author(s).

Collated and complete. Pages trimmed. Octavo, 8.75" x 5.75" A ABOUT THE BOOK SET The French Revolution: A History was written by the Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle. A massive undertaking which draws together a wide variety of sources, Carlyle's history--despite the unusual style in which it is written--is considered to be an authoritative account of the early course of the Revolution. Carlyle's radical departure from the classical histories of the eighteenth century came as a shock to Victorian critics. Lady Morgan found the mere publishing of such a work premature and superfluous while censuring Carlyle's style. William Makepeace Thackeray found the style initially difficult yet ultimately rewarding and called the book's appearance "timely". Mill praised the work lavishly, announcing that "This is not so much a history as an epic poem." The book immediately established Carlyle's reputation as an important 19th-century intellectual. It also served as a major influence on a number of his contemporaries, including Charles Dickens, who compulsively carried the book around with him, and drew on it while producing A Tale of Two Cities. Martin Luther King Jr. often quoted from the third chapter of the sixth book of volume one, saying: "We shall overcome, because Carlyle is right, 'No lie can live forever.'" ABOUT THE AUTHOR Thomas Carlyle (December 1795 - February 1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, and philosopher from the Scottish Lowlands. A leading writer of the Victorian era, he exerted a profound influence on 19th-century art, literature, and philosophy. His works were highly regarded throughout Europe and North America. He founded the London Library, contributed significantly to the creation of the National Portrait Galleries in London and Scotland, was elected Lord Rector of Edinburgh University in 1865, and received the Pour le M rite in 1874, among other honors. CONDITION REPORT Both volumes are in VG antiquarian condition. Square spines with firm hinges and joints. Rubbing to extremities, joints and spine. Chipping to spine labels. Sunning to spines.
