Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: Overall very good. Small group of reading copies of works by Langston Hughes, Nella Larsen, Toni Morrison, Lorraine Hansberry, Martin Luther King Jr. and more - from the library of groundbreaking Black feminist Barbara Smith. Barbara Smith's life and career as a Black lesbian feminist activist has had an immense impac…t upon multiple fields. She was the author, co-author, or editor of many of the founding documents of Black feminism, from the epochal 1977 Combahee River Collective Statement (a work credited with largely establishing the intersectional theory Davis applies here); to TOWARD A BLACK FEMINIST CRITICISM (1977), "the earliest theoretical statement on black feminist criticism" (McDowell); to HOME GIRLS: A BLACK FEMINIST ANTHOLOGY (1983), issued by her Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press (co-founded with Beverly Smith, Cherríe Moraga, and Audre Lorde, and which also published THIS BRIDGE CALLED MY BACK). Smith's papers were recently placed at the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Harvard Radcliffe Institute; the Schlesinger not acquiring duplicate titles, these books come from Smith's remaining library. Titles are: STRENGTH TO LOVE by Martin Luther King, Jr. (1964 first Pocket Books printing); LOOK OUT, WHITEY! by Julius Lester (1969 Grove Evergreen printing); PASSING by Nella Larsen (1971 first Collier printing); BLACK POWER by Stokely Carmichael and Charles V. Hamilton (1960s Vintage Books printing); THE BLACK PANTHERS by Gene Marine (1969 first Signet printing); SELECTED POEMS by Langston Hughes (1974 Vintage Books edition, with additional gift inscription to Smith); THE WAYS OF WHITE FOLKS by Langston Hughes (1971 Vintage Books edition); THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X (1966 fifth paperback printing); A RAISIN IN THE SUN / THE SIGN IN SIDNEY BRUSTEIN'S WINDOW by Lorraine Hansberry (1966 first Signet printing); and TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK by Lorraine Hansberry (1970 first Signet printing). 10 vols. largely 7'' x 4.25'' each. Original color wrappers. From the library of Barbara Smith, with her ink owner name or label to all volumes. Moderate edgewear, soil. Some spine creases. Leaves toned.
