En este libro se realiza una presentación plural y matizada del proceso de fronterización y desfronterización en la raya o raia ?así se denomina localmente la frontera entre los Estados de España y Portugal? desde su establecimiento moderno hasta el presente. En la conformación de las fronteras confluyen dos estrategias no necesariamente coincidentes. Por un lado, la estrategia de los propios Estados, para los que la frontera, además de su carácter político-militar, tiene una importante significación simbólica, tanto en la reproducción de los modelos de identificación nacional, como en la justificación de la existencia de los mecanismos de defensa/protección/represión, tres aspectos que van unidos de una forma necesaria. Pero junto a las estrategias de los centros de poder actúan también las estrategias de las propias poblaciones que viven en la frontera y que, a lo largo del tiempo, aprendieron a instrumentalizar esa posición fronteriza. De esta forma, se analizan en la raya dos lógicas de acción y relación, que en ocasiones son coincidentes y en otras están confrontadas. Las transformaciones que se produjeron en el siglo XIX en las fronteras no son inferiores a las que se están produciendo hoy en día, tanto a nivel global como en el caso de la frontera hispano-portuguesa. Son unos cambios vinculados a la nueva posición que han adquirido España y Portugal en el contexto internacional, definido por la integración de ambos países en la Unión Europea, haciendo que la frontera común pase de ser externa, de dos países, a interna, de la UE, con todo lo que eso conlleva en la desarticulación de un sistema socieconómico, político y cultural, que estuvo en la base de las relaciones de las propias poblaciones locales durante mucho tiempo.
