Condition: Very Good+. First edition. First edition, first printing. 32pp. Bound in publisher's green illustrated stapled wraps. Very Good+ with light toning and creasing to wraps, text. Edges curled, one short tear & light chipping to fore edge. Scarce, with only seven holdings listed in OCLC and none available in retail. A chapbook by an African American poet dedicated "to the nine Scottsboro boys with the hope that the sale of it might assure them a small part of the financial support necessary to rid them of the stain which has been spilled on their souls." They were all Black teenagers accused of raping two white women in 1931.The royalties from the first 1,000 copies of this chapbook sold were to be donated to their defense fund. The case would inform and influence authors as diverse as Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, and Jean-Paul Sartre, and galvanize the American Left to begin considering African Americans in the South, whose plight they had previously largely ignored. A 1933 review in the Daily News Journal of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, described Carter's book as "a small volume of verse dealing with that famous Alabama inter-racial squabble.".…
