Add to basket24pp, 8vo. Saddle-stitched pamphlet in pink wraps the the title-page reprinted on the cover, this time within a decorative border. In fair condition, aged, worn and creased, with slight loss to outer corner of front cover. Bushnell takes as his text 2 Chronicles XXXII.30, and begins his 'Discourse': 'Any community or city will prosper that will do its duty. Having the prudence necessary to a right husbandry of its resources, the industry to improve its advantages, and the spirit to seize on whatever opportunities are placed within its reach, the increase of substance and of numbers is a necessary consequence. It may not always come by damming water-courses, and opening sluices or canals, to bring in supplies of water. There are other sluices of prosperity besides water-sluices, and a wise people will make their election.' No copies found in Britain. Now uncommon.

Western half only of a map of the United States during the period of Texas independence. Backed with linen, quite worn but overall good. There is a large inset at the bottom left of Mexico, Texas, most of Central America and Mexican territory in the American West. This is a schoolroom map with no geographical features identified except by letters and numbers which are keyed to an accompanying book (not present here). The Republic of Texas is actually represented twice here, once on the main map (showing approximately the western 3/4 of Texas. While it is unfortunate that the eastern half of this map has long since been lost, this western portion is by far the more interesting half because of the huge upheavals going on in the American West at this time and over the succeeding twenty years.s.

Map of the United States, hand-colored by state. Shows to the Pacific Coast and Panama. Fair condition, with small holes along a horizontal fold and bottom right corner torn off with loss of part of the straight line border. Top left corner also torn off outside of the border. Short tears along right margin. This is an early issue of a popular map of the United States. This is different from the later issues as it has portraits of the American Presidents, through Fillmore, at the sides. The portrait of George Washington is incorporated into the cartouche. There is also an inset view of the United States Capitol building. This appears to be an earlier issue than the one described in Wheat (Transmississippi West) 664 as it does not have most of the many town names in the Gold Region listed there. San Diego is marked, but Los Angeles is not. Wheat also mentions that the map shows a "not yet-existing Nebraska" while this state shows a large Indian Territory which includes Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. There is some definition of the river system of that area, but no labeling of it as the Gold Region. Wheat 664 "A fine specimen, possibly in part based on the Topographical Engineer's map of '1850' that was really 1851. Without going into detail, it is clear and definite in the West." While rare on the market, this map does emerge on the market periodically. However, we have never seen another example which includes the Presidential portraits at the sides.
