Dreesmann Jr. gave this copy to Cal French, the eminent Shiba Kokan scholar and author. In Cal's letter, he thanks Dreesmann for pointing out the true source of Kokan's Rangaku [Dutch learning] on how to engrave copper plates. This book was one of a few Kokan consulted to learn the western technique of engraving. . French thanks Dreesmann for sending him the book and also shares the address of a mutual colleague Steve Addis, who will be arriving in Kyoto. Dreesmann was also an author and scholar on Hakuin. . The letter is weakly signed by French, along with Dreesmann' calling card taped to the letter which is lightly tipped into the front endpaper. .
