Hardback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition - Stated (Infantry Journal - 1948). VERY GOOD, no dust jacket. No marks in text, Light wear on cover with sunned spine. xii, 262 pages; illustrations (some color), portraits, maps (some color). . . . . . . The official World War II record of the *Striking Sixth,* the last Marine division to be formed and the only one created, employed, and inactivated entirely overseas. Issued as a large, illustrated volume of xii, 262 pages, it traces the division's organization from veteran units already in the field - most notably the 4th, 22nd, and 29th Marines - through intensive training on Guadalcanal, the climactic assault and bitter fighting on Okinawa, and the postwar occupation duties in Guam, Yokosuka, and North China. Written for both the historical record and the men who served, the book blends operational narrative with maps, photographs, and first-hand anecdotes that *personalize* the account, emphasizing the experience of the rifleman as well as the decisions of higher command. Chapters carry the reader from the origins of the division's units and the brigade's fight on Guam, through the landing on Okinawa, the advance up the island, the struggle for Mount Yaetake and Sugar Loaf Hill, the battle for Naha and the Oroku Peninsula, and finally the division's record and commanders. Long recognized as the standard unit history of the Sixth Marine Division, it remains an important source for the Okinawa campaign and Marine Corps operations in the Pacific.
