The author, the son of a wealthy farmer, falls for a noblewoman who is already engaged to a debauched lord. Despite the obstacles, the author's love never falters, and the book follows his journey as he tries to win her heart and overcome the societal barriers that threaten to keep them apart. Exploring themes of love, social class, and the enduring power of the human spirit, this book artfully weaves together the author's personal narrative with insights into a bygone era. The author's vivid prose and the book's rich historical context will captivate readers, offering an immersive and thought-provoking tale that examines the nature of love and the sacrifices one might make in its name. Le paysan gentilhomme is a utopian novel, the earliest published work of fiction set in a New Zealand scene. The author is stated as Monsieur de Catalde, but his real identity has never been revealed. Raymond John Howgego, in his work on invented and apocryphal narratives of travel, places the novel in New Zealand. In the novel the Isles Jumelles are described as two islands and a smaller island nearby where Ransav is initially cast ashore. The Twin Islands, located between 44 and 50 degrees of southern latitude beyond New Holland, and separated by an arm of the sea one and a half leagues wide, are thus named because of their proximity, and of their equal size. One is owned by a king, and the other is governed in the form of a republic. They are distinguished by the name Royal Island and Lake Dwellers Island.

First Edition
Bel exemplaire.Hartig et Soboul, p. 48.
