Gurlitt (1754-1827) "wurde 1778 Lehrer am Gymnasium in Kloster Berge bei Magdeburg, dessen Leitung er 1779 mit einem Kollegen, 1797 allein übernahm. 1802 folgte er einem Ruf als Leiter des Johanneums nach Hamburg, wo er zudem die Professur für orientalische Sprachen am Akademischen Gymnasium innehatte. Gurlitt führte das System der Fach- und Leistungsklassen und 1804 die Reifeprüfung als Abschluß der Gelehrtenschule ein" (DBE; vgl. auch ausf. First and only Aldine edition of the popular saga of Jason and the Argonauts of their quest for the Golden Fleece: referring to this Aldine edition, Dibdin says thar "fine copies are obtained with some difficulty, and at no small price". Aldine anchor and dolphin device on the title page and last leaf. Text in Latin.This edition also includes the Argonautica falsely attributed to the legendary singer Orpheus, a fascinating "autobiographical" view of the search for the Golden Fleece through the eyes of one of Jason's fellow Argonauts. The translator's name is not given, but apparently this rendition in Latin had been done by Crinitus.8vo (6 1/2 x 4 inches), 148-leaves. Old full tan calf ruled in blind with gilt corner and central ornaments in gilt, with early rebacking , with raised bands and gilt lettered direct. A very short ink stain to lower blank fore-corner of the last 20-leaves, A very nice crisp and clean copy. Engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown.Valerius Flaccus (died 88 AD) lived during the reign of the emperor Vespasian and dedicated this work to him, to glorify Vespasian's conquest of Britain. His only extant work is this unfinished heroic poem in eight books on the Argonautic expedition, quite similar in most respects to the famous "Argonauticon" by Apollonius of Rhodes. In some passages it remains very close to the Greek original, but Flaccus also adds entirely new episodes. Small spot of bio-predation on the bottom edge affecting a few dozen pages, but otherwise quite clean and unmarked internally. Attractively gilt page edges.
