Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The complete two-volume set, in very good condition, rebound in half leather over marbled paper-covered boards, with new endpapers. The text is clean, the plates strong, the folding maps excellent, some foxing to text and offsetting from plates. Properly withdrawn from an academic library, with l…ibrary markings limited to cut-stamps to title pages and accession number stamped to following leaf. Our copy of volume II was printed in 1810 by J. Stratford. Volume I of our set was published in 1816 by Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon from plates prepared by Stratford, who had been sent to debtor's prison in 1813, and whose name remains in a note ("Stratford, Printer") at the foot of the final page. The text of our copy is complete; all of the nine maps are present; four of the 121 plates are lacking: plates 47 and 48 (Women of Santorini, Women of Nio) are simply missing, while the publisher's use of identical names for different plates resulted in duplication of two and omission of their like-named counterparts. (Please see attached image for "List of the prints, with the places for their insertion." What principle may have guided the naming of the prints and the organization of that list may never be known). Lapses and duplications in page numbering complicate the collation of these volumes. In no case has any content been lost or duplicated, as the text, catchwords, and gather numbers are continuous. Volume I: frontis., engraved t.p., t.p., [ii]-iv, [i]-iv, [1]-632, 637-752, 759-764, maps (1 folding), plates. Volume II, 2 blanks, engraved t.p., t.p., iv, [5]-14, 13[b], 14[b], 15-482, 475[b]-482[b], 483-710, 801-812, 809[b]-812[b], 817-839[a], 839[b], 839[c], 840-870, i-[iv], maps (1 folding), plates. Additional postage will be required to ship this handsome set outside the United States. 4920 grams.

Selected, Arranged, and Digested, from the narratives of the lates…t and most authentic travellers and navigators " by Cavendish Pelham. NO covers. The pagination runs from the original book and covers pages 306 - 344 (page 305 being the end of the previous Chapter) together with the Original very large Fold-out, Hand-coloured, MAP of Spain and Portugal "Drawn from the best authorities" 1808. Sadly years back dealers used to 'break' books for their maps and prints and I suspect this is what happened to this - thankfully the previous owner kept it all together so this is an opportunity to own this section on Spain and Portugal in its entireity, without having to spend the thousands asked for the original complete work! Apart from it being disbound there is a small loss to what was the inner blank edge of the first page, but otherwise all is VERY clean, tight and bright and the map is complete and a good deep image, tho obviously creased on the folds. Text printed in double columns and with Notes. Images available on request. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
