Black and white illustrations and photo reproductions throughout. [from Preface] This is not a history of Brookings or Brookings County. This is a book about the City of Brookings and some of what was required of its people to make it someplace special. It is a collection of tidbits and gleanings found primarily in the past issues of the Brookings Register, and from other publications, about the community. As part of the research for this book, I reviewed every issue of the Register from 1900 to the present. In some cases, I was also able to interview some of those who were involved in smoothing the rough edges and making the decisions that pointed the city in the right direction. Space did not permit mention of all that took place in this community over the years. In fact, after writing the chapters it was necessary to go back and cull out the least interesting in order to keep the number of pages to a manageable number. Despite my deep interest in and intense loyalty to South Dakota State University, I purposely left out the history of that great institution, touching only briefly on some of the high spots. The history of the university is another book in itself for someone to write. I also did not delve deeply into the history of sports at Brookings High School or at the university, mentioning only some of the highlights along the way. The history of Brookings sports is, again, another book waiting to be written. Accounts of crimes visited upon the city over the years are limited to some of the more spectacular or unusual. There has never been, so far as I can find, a history of the City of Brookings. This book comes closest to filling the bill, but still, it only glances back and highlights some of the more interesting and important events that have helped make our town someplace special. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Pandemonium wafted up out of Deadwood Gulch whenever bellowing, muddy oxen teams led wagons rattling into town. For a decade, thousands of bull trains hauled all that miners, settlers and ne'er-do-wells needed to survive in that isolated prairie oasis. The bulls, thousands of them in mile-lo…ng, meandering trains, had last known civilization in Fort Pierre, two hundred miles to the east. After weeks on the harsh prairie of the Sioux, the exhausted convoys appeared out of the prairie dust, each team of twenty or more oxen pulling sturdy, white-bonneted wagons filled with provisions. Author Chuck Cecil restores the glory of the near-forgotten yet indispensable symbols of the West that made life possible on the frontier's western fringe. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. South Dakota has always had an intermittent relationship with prohibition. Constantly changing legislation kept citizens, saloonkeepers, bootleggers and other scofflaws on tenterhooks, wondering what might come next. The scandalous indiscretions of the lethal Verne Miller and the contributio…ns of "agents of change" like Senators Norbeck and Senn kept ne'er-do-wells on edge. In 1927, the double murder of prohibition officers near Redfield dominated headlines. From the Black Hills stills of Bert Miller to the Sioux Falls moonshine outfit buried under Lon Vaught's chicken house, uncork these oft-overlooked and tumultuous eighteen years in state history. In the first book of its kind, award-winning journalist Chuck Cecil delivers the boisterous details of an intoxicating era. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
