Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Oblong 48mo. Embossed leatherette wrappers with "Autographs" on the front wrap and gilt edges. Very good or better with the string-tied binding a bit tender, general wear to the wrappers and a few internal pages neatly removed. An autograph album kept by a man named John R. "Jack" Finnay who likely worked at the film production company Famous Players-Lasky, which later became Paramount Pictures. The most well-known Signatures include those of Jesse L. Lasky, co-founder of both Famous Players and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, Oscar-winning director Cecil B. DeMille, and silent films star Gloria Swanson. It was during this time at Famous Players-Lasky that DeMille and Swanson were first paired for a series of films that made Swanson a star. That relationship was the inspiration for the legendary final line of *Sunset Boulevard*, when a Swanson, playing a former silent-film star turned murder, is enticed to surrender to authority by newsreel camera saying: "All right Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." The remainder of the autograph album is filled with Famous Players-Lasky actors and behind the scene players, who appeared with Swanson or were directed by DeMille. Most notable among them are Jeannie MacPherson, actress, screenwriter and DeMille paramour; Mary Miles Minter, an actress later involved in the William Desmond Taylor scandal; Eilnor Glyn, English novelist and screenwriter who popularized the phrase "It-girl"; screenwriters Olga Printzlau, Julia Crawford, and Mary H. O'Connor; and numerous other supporting players, as well as Sid Grauman, founder of the famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. A wonderful album from the heydey of silent films. A list of autographs is avaiable upon request.
