Paperback. Condition: New. This firsthand account, never before published in English, details a secret World War II mission in 1944 called Operation Salamander, in which Tadeusz Chciuk (writing as Marek Celt) parachuted into German-occupied Poland with the enigmatic political adviser Dr. Jozef Retinger. The goal of the mission was to persuade the Polish underground forces and political leadership to accept that it was imperative to start negotiating with the Soviets right away, as they were now to be considered Poland's allies and had the full support of the British and Americans. The story culminates in Operation Wildhorn III, in which Chciuk and Retinger were picked up in Poland by a British plane that landed just a short distance from a significant detachment of German forces, and flew them to safety.

About the book >.>.> This book presents a firsthand account of a secret World War II mission from 1944, titled Operation Salamander, authored by Marek Celt, the pen name of Tadeusz Chciuk-Celt. It details his experience parachuting into German-occupied Poland alongside Dr. Jézef Retinger, a political adviser. Their mission aimed to persuade the Polish underground forces and political leadership to initiate negotiations with the Soviets, who were now viewed as allies, backed by British and American support. The narrative reaches its climax with Operation Wildhorn III, where Chciuk-Celt and Retinger are extracted from Poland by a British plane, landing perilously close to a substantial German troop presence, and returning them to safety.Marek Celt, born Tadeusz Chciuk-Celt (1916-2001), was a second lieutenant in the Polish Army. He undertook two parachute missions into occupied Poland during the war, earning the Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest military honour. After the war, he dedicated four decades to working for Radio Free Europe, sharing the story of Polish hardships and resistance.Wojciech Frazik, a Polish historian known for his expertise in the history of the wartime Polish Underground, contributes to the context of the memoir. Residing in Krakow and affiliated with the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), his insight enriches the historical backdrop of the account. Additionally, Jan Chciuk-Celt, the author?s son, reflects on his father's legacy as a Polish refugee raised in Germany, now residing in Portland, Oregon. This memoir not only illuminates a crucial moment in Polish history but also underscores the resilience and determination of those who fought for their nation's future.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This is the true story of a Polish WWII courier who survived two secret parachute missions and escaped Gestapo capture multiple times. The six-man commando team of Operation 'Jacket' was dropped into Poland before dawn on December 28, 1941, to deliver information and money to the Underground authorities. They flew in under fire, parachuted into a dangerous area, and got into a savage firefight with the Germans almost immediately, losing two men. Second Lieutenant Chciuk and three others got away despite a determined German manhunt, and fulfilled their various assignments in Poland. Chciuk's assignment was to make an assessment of the state of the Polish Underground and report back to HQ. His observations include two unforgettable trips to the Warsaw Ghetto. There followed an arduous and complicated plan for Chciuk to return to HQ in London 'by any means possible,' which included several clandestine border crossings and numerous assumed identities, several visits to Gestapo headquarters in Zagreb, and time spent in a Spanish concentration camp. He finally got back to England in June of 1943, filed his report, and was awarded the Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest military decoration. This is his story.
