Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Originally copyrighted in 1933 by F. S. Crofts & Co.; this copy carries the statement "Copyright renewed, 1961, by Mrs. Sofia Serrano and Augusto Centeno," together with printer/code E86290. The title page identifies Centeno as Professor Emeritus of Spanish at Connecticut College. The text is a substantial upper-level Spanish grammar and composition manual, progressing through articles, nouns, ser and estar, pronouns, indicative and subjunctive constructions, infinitives, idioms, and vocabulary. The work originated in 1933 and proved unusually durable: bibliographic records document later editions and revisions extending at least into the 1970s and 1990s. This copy is particularly appealing as an artifact of long-term language study, retaining a wonderfully miscellaneous group of former-owner materials used as bookmarks and study aids. These include a clipped advertisement for a summer Spanish-culture program in Madrid, offering two weeks July 9-23 for $1,395 (Three weeks noted at $1,495), with Iberia 747 airfare, lodging in Madrid's University City or with a Spanish family, meals, and recreational facilities; a yellow ruled vocabulary/grammar note headed approximately "Adj changing meaning w. ser / estar"; a torn telephone-message form; and a dated June 13, 1987 Manassas Small Engine Service receipt for a $4.96 purchase. Several pieces remain projecting above the text block exactly as found. Rather than being bibliographically integral, they document the book's later working life. A particularly attractive production feature is the signed pictorial map of Spain and Portugal by George Annand (1890-1980) reproduced across the front interior board. Rendered in green and black, Annand's map incorporates his characteristic combination of practical cartography and decorative illustration: calligraphic geographic names, mountain ranges, a compass rose, sailing vessel, seabird, palm tree, and the surrounding portions of France and North Africa. Annand was a prolific American graphic artist and pictorial cartographer whose commissions included work for Rand McNally, the Waldorf-Astoria, General Foods, and major book publishers; examples of his work are preserved and studied by the Harvard Map Collection. Map of Spain and Portugal by George Annand (illustrator).…
