Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. XIXe siècle. This magnificent portfolio captures one of the nineteenth century's boldest attempts to restore Pompeian wall painting to the living knowledge of the European cultured public. Originally published in Naples around 1886 under the patronage of Cavalier Pasquale D'Amelio and lithographically… realized by the celebrated house of Richter & Co., the work presented grand-format chromolithographs drawn by the architect Edoardo Cerillo and transferred to stone by the master lithographer Vincenzo Loria (18501939). Each composition reproduces the murals of famous Pompeian housesthe Casa del Poeta Tragico, the Casa di Castore e Polluce, the Casa della Piccola Fontana in Mosaicoin colours of exceptional vibrancy that sought to preserve, in pigment, the chromatic splendour of the frescoes as they appeared in the years immediately following their excavation. For scholars and collectors of classical archaeology, nineteenth-century Italianate publications, and the history of lithographic reproduction, this is a landmark object: a work that earned royal recognition (as the title indicates) and introduced an entire generation to the visual grandeur of the buried city. This is the original 1886 edition, issued in an illustrated chromolithographic portfolio binding with gilt colonnade and winged quadriga set against ruins and classical divinities. The copy bears a manuscript inscription in ink"S. M. Tbiasini"apparently the ex-libris of an Italian or Central European collector, whose identity remains untraced. The interior pages include the quadrilingual title page (Italian, French, English, German), supporting text, and ten of the original twenty plates: seven chromolithographs in complete and pristine condition, and three further plates bearing old cuts (now of decorative value only). The portfolio's covers are worn and rubbed at the corners, though the case itself remains unbroken and the binding structurally sound. The extant plates display scattered light foxing along the margins and text areas; the seven intact chromolithographs remain vibrant and vivid, their colours undiminished, making them suitable for independent framing or scholarly display.Orders are shipped within 24 hours of purchase in carefully chosen, well-protected packaging selected to suit the age and fragility of the book. The seller is happy to answer any further questions in English, French, or German do not hesitate to enquire.

Add to basketCouverture rigide. Condition: Bon. first edition.

The colors are very close to the originals during the first days of their recovery from the darkness of 2000 years, before the hot Neapolitan sun has bleached some of the pigments and induced a delicacy of tone which was not meant by the painters. The text is written by an architect, Edoardo Cerillo, who is not only well read in the great literature that deals with this famous little buried town, but has ideas of his own, and bold ones.
