Aquella muerte familiar, el extrañamiento que supone a quien la sufre y a quienes la viven en sus alrededores, da pie a una nueva indagación: la que Alfons Cervera lleva a cabo en el territorio de la emigración económica a Francia que en los años sesenta del pasado siglo dejó vacíos muchos pueblos del interior. Muchos de aquellos emigrantes se quedaron en Francia y otros regresaron. En aquel nuevo espacio de acogida convivían -a ratos bien y otros no tanto- la emigración económica y el exilio que tanta gente sufrió durante la guerra y después de la victoria franquista en 1939. El protagonista de esta novela que ahora anunciamos regresa desde Orange a Los Yesares (el territorio de siempre en las novelas del autor de "Maquis") para asistir el entierro de Teresa, la protagonista de "Esas vidas". Un día, sólo un día, en que tendrá lugar el reencuentro con muchos de los hombres y mujeres de aquellos años, cuando niños y adultos vivían un tiempo aparentemente nuevo y feliz que al cabo no podría ser otro que el del desarraigo. Cuando alguien sale de su sitio de siempre ya son imposibles todos los regresos: se acaba siendo de ninguna parte. Ésa es la idea que flota en las páginas de esta novela que una vez más surge al margen de otras líneas de escritura que ocupan el panorama literario español de los últimos años. En su Trilogía de la Memoria, formada por las novelas "El color del crepúsculo", "Maquis" y "La noche inmóvil", Alfons Cervera profundizaba en las huellas de una época (la posguerra española) y un lugar (Los Yesares, topónimo figurado de los pueblos de la Serranía valenciana) que dejaron en los personajes que pueblan sus páginas las cicatrices de un tiempo devastado. En La sombra del cielo Cervera rescata aquellos personajes (la mayoría de ellos, niños y niñas en los años cuarenta y primeros cincuenta) sólo que ahora viven los años noventa y en esas vidas confluyen dos circunstancias nada tranquilizadoras. De una parte, Los Yesares es un pueblo anclado en el pasado, con unos gobernantes absolutamente despegados de cualquier comportamiento acorde con los tiempos democráticos. Como en muchos lugares del interior de nuestro país, las relaciones viciadas que se heredaron de la guerra siguen vigentes. Y eso se da en Los Yesares con casi la misma y negativa intensidad que en los años cuarenta. De otra parte, en el pueblo, así como en los alrededores, se añade una circunstancia que violenta la convivencia: los montes son arrasados por las excavadoras, que extraerán la tierra de esas montañas para que en los pueblos ricos de la costa fabriquen cerámicas de lujo. Y a esa situación que viven las gentes del pueblo, se añade la aparición un buen día de un argentino, Walter Reyes Bazán, que llega a Los Yesares nadie sabe muy bien por qué ni con que intenciones. Quizá exiliado a causa de la dictadura argentina, será el personaje principal de esta historia, un personaje misterioso y contradictorio, cuyo desconocido pasado encierra en un silencio espeso y hosco.
