Das erstmals 1593 (1603 erstmals illustriert) erschienene Werk des Cesare Ripa (1555-1622) gilt als eines der bedeutensten Emblembücher des 17. Jahrhunderts. Aufbauend auf Studien antiker Bild- und Schriftquellen, auch der Bibel, gab Ripa abstrakten Begriffen, Künsten und Wissenschaften, Tugenden und Lastern, Affekten und Leidenschaften ein Bild. Aus heutiger Sicht ist das Werk Ripas bedeutsam für die Entschlüsselung barocker allegorischer Darstellungen. Das Buch war, gemäß einem in der Renaissance üblichen Verfahren, nicht systematisch, sondern alphabetisch angeordnet. Jedem Begriff entspricht in dem Buch ein Bild mit einer Beschreibung der allegorischen Figur oder Personifikation.
