CESSI, perosissimo collaboratore ai maggiori periodici classico-filologici e recensore diligentissimo, nella Rivista di storia antica (il cui direttore, il marchese Giacomo Tropea, gli era stato professore in Padova) e in Classici e neolatini soprattutto, mostrò competenza e dottrina, ma, pur probo filologo scarsa profondità, schierato con rumorosi antivitelliani avversari del rigore filologico, tronfi nazionalisti paludati da difensori della patria in funzione antitedesca (cfr. Treccani). Così com'è.
