La obra fue tenida en alta estima por la Academia francesa de las Ciencias, y recomendada como un modelo de navegación para los futuros marineros. La primera parte relata el viaje del autor de Brest en Louisburg así como cuatro expediciones, mientras que la 2ª parte es el informe de sus observaciones astronómicas en el mar.
