Condition: Gut. 171 S. / p. ; 24 cm Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar / a good and clean copy - In 1910, Sigmund Freud read Daniel Paul Schreber's Memoirs of My Nervous Illness ( 1903 ) , which describes Schreber s extraordinary experiences during a severe and prolonged psychotic episode. Freud later broke with his usual psychoanalytic approach by using Schreber as his chief example in writing his still influential paper on paranoia, Psychoanalytic Notes on an Autobiographical Account of a Case of Paranoia ( Dementia Paranoides ) Because Freud never met Schreber, his essay is interpretive and has interest both as literary criticism and psychoanalysis. -- C. Bany Chabot's book continues the dialogue between psychoanalysis and literary studies, showing how these disciplines can learn from each other. Chabot believes that Psychoanalytic Notes" grants a unique access to Freud's own interpretive practice, because the reader of Memoirs has all the information available to Freud and can follow Freud's selection of materials and theoretical assumptions. The results of such a reading, Chabot hopes, will clarify the nature of interpretation and the assumptions that guide it within psychoanalysis, and allow a deeper understanding of the relationship between psychoanalysis and literary studies. -- "Chabot's Freud on Schreber is an original, highly perceptive reading of Freud's rhetoric in the Schreber essay that offers us a model for the reciprocal relationship between the interpretive strategies of psychoanalysis and literaiy criticism. This book is an outstanding example of recent Freudian revisionist criticism''_John T. Irwin, Chair, The Writing Seminars, The Johns Hopkins University. -- Chabot "is right in his warning that psychoanalytic education does too little to keep the hermeneutic principle in mind. [ His ] detailed analysis of the interpretive process can serve as a valuable corrective for this deficiency0-Stanley A. Leavy, Medical School, Yale University.
