Daten und Fakten über 500 Lexika und Enzyklopädien aus aller Welt. 1980).- Ephraim Chambers (c.1680 ? 15 May 1740) was an English writer and encyclopaedist, who is primarily known for producing the Cyclopaedia, or a Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences.Chambers was born in Milton near Kendal, Westmorland, England. Little is known of his early life but he attended Heversham Grammar School, then was apprenticed to a globe maker, John Senex, in London from 1714 to 1721. It was here that he developed the plan of the Cyclopaedia, or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences. After beginning the Cyclopaedia, he left Senex's service and devoted himself entirely to the encyclopedia project. He also took lodging in Gray's Inn, where he remained for the rest of his life. Chambers died in Islington and was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey.The first edition of the Cyclopaedia appeared by subscription in 1728 and was dedicated to George II, King of Great Britain. When he died in 1740, he left materials for a Supplement; edited by George Lewis Scott, this was published in 1753.He also wrote for, and possibly edited, the Literary Magazine (1735?1736), which mainly published book reviews. Chambers worked on translating other works in French on perspective and chemistry from 1726 to 1727, including the Practice of Perspective from the French of Jean Dubreuil. Scattered spotting. Printed in two columns. An unsophisticated set. Bound in contemporary 1/4 black leather over marbled boards. A majority of the boards are detached and the leather spines are chipped with loss. All volumes come in modern archival folding boxes. Early signature of G. K. Richardson, 1840 on fep of one volume. Previously owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Abraham Rees (1743-1825) was a British clergyman best known for this, his outstanding encyclopedic work, The Cyclopaedia. (Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain.) Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues, but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia, "is the richest work for technology of the period, with detailed text and handsome, carefully prepared plates." Ferguson, Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology (part II)". Technology and Culture 3.2 (1962): 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century, especially in the fields of history, geography, geology, natural history, and the physical sciences senu lato, required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'" (Taxon Vol. 35, No. 2 (1986), 452-453.) Some of the notable contributors to this work were Charles Bruney on music; Charles Koenig, Robert Bakewell, and John Farey on geology; John Dalton and Humphry Davy on chemistry; David Mushet on metallurgy; William Pearson on astronomy; James Edward Smith, William Wood, William Fitt Drake and William Woodville on botany. "Rees Cyclopaedia is one of the first works to interpret correctly William Smith's ideas on strata identification on the basis of fossil organisms." Ibid. He re-edited the original work in 1778 and created the supplements which contained much new matter. His edition was originally published in 1781-6 before a re…print in 1788-91. Therefore this set is a very early edition of Rees' publication. For this edition Rees is said to have added more than 4,400 new articles.With an illustrated frontispiece to the first volume.Comprising volumes I and II of the original work and the two supplement volumes. This set is four volumes total. Without the plate volume which is often bound separately.This set is without the plate volume which was issued separately.Volume I is dated 1786, Volume II is dated 1779, Volume III is dated 1781 and Volume IV is dated 1783.Bookplates to the front pastedown , 'FW Brydges Esq Tiberton, Herefordshire' and 'Robert Henry Lee Warner'. Both of these individuals were from Tyberton Court which was built in 1729 for William Brydges. Robert Henry Lee-Warner was a descendent of the Brydges family and the house passed to the Warner family due to the lack of male heirs during the early nineteenth century. It was inherited by Anne Brydges who married Rev. Henry Lee Warner.A comprehensive encyclopaedia, with some tables throughout including one showing the Sun's declination.An important edition of this noted encyclopaedia. In a contemporary half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, worn to the spines. Loss to the head of the spine to all volumes, heavier to volume I.
