History of Armenia by Father Michael Chamich (Mikayel Chamchian), first published in the late eighteenth century, is one of the earliest comprehensive histories of the Armenian people written by an Armenian scholar. Drawing on classical sources, medieval chronicles, and ecclesiastical traditions, Chamich traces Armeniaâs history from legendary antiquity through the medieval period, emphasizing the political, cultural, and religious development of the Armenian nation. Written in the Mekhitarist scholarly tradition, the work sought to preserve Armenian historical memory and identity at a time when the Armenian people were dispersed across several empires.
