"This booklet sets about the pleasurable task of enumerating and describing the trees on six of the estates owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Because of their transient nature, most shrubs have been omitted. The mansions on these estates raange in date of construction from 1839 when Kingscote was built to 1902 when Rosecliff came into existence. Between thesese dates evn the syles of landscaping underwent changes, so that Chateau-sur-Mer (1852), Marble House (1892), The Breakers (1895), and The Elms (1901) were confronted with new and wider selections of plant material, as well as changing tastes. The end product, as seen by today's visitor, differs from what the first owners of the estates saw, but the results now are as fully rewarding. The gardens of the Newport estates, no less than the mansions themselves, required teams of workers to prune and manicure, to trim and primp the grounds. Troops of gardeners and their helpers daily set off to work down Bellevue Avenue armed with their weaponry of hoes, rakes, spades, and pitchforks, some turning in at one estate, some at another. In its heyday, and even as late as the 1940s, Chateau-sur-Mer emplyed eleven gardeners, the chief gardener at the Wetmore estate for thirty years being a Scot, John Cairns." - excerpt from the Introduction. Hopf, John T. (estate photographs) (illustrator).
