Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The remains on Delos became known to fifteenth-century seafarers and travellers and were then explored primarily by the French School at Athens from 1873 onwards. They have yielded substantial records that serve as a benchmark in Mediterranean archaeology. In conjunction with many ancient te…xts, they provide an outstanding account of the changing features of a civilization its religion and institutions, its economy and everyday life from the onset of archaic times through to late antiquity. Lying in the heart of the Cyclades, Delos shares with other islands in the archipelago a semi-arid climate and low relief where powerful northerly and southerly winds contend or alternate. Measuring just 3.5 km2 in area, it might seem quite insignificant had it not become, from antiquity and for several centuries, one of the Greek worlds leading centres of political, religious and financial power. For visitors sailing from Mykonos along the craggy northern shore of Delos, the contrast with the haunting remains of the ancient port and sanctuaries that come into view shortly after is striking. It is that same contrast between the islands seemingly barren ground and its fabulous wealth that the myths and legends about Delos sought to explain. The great sanctuary of Apollo that arose on the island was the hub of things. All areas of Delian life depended on it, whatever the changes down the centuries. From the earliest known developments on the island in the seventh century BC up until it was gradually deserted in the sixth century AD, through the remains we can contemplate the unique history of an island community amid the swirls and eddies of the major changes in the eastern Mediterranean. Gathering data from the Greek world and the Roman world, this book aimsto contribute to a better analysis of local and regional economiccircuits in the Mediterranean, and puts therefore the issues of storage, distribution methods and speculation at the heart of the debate. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Freed from Athenian tutelage in 314 BC, at a time of geopolitical changes that marked the beginnings of the Hellenistic period in the Aegean world, Delos gradually consolidated its political and economic independence. During the third and second centuries, the Delian community redefined the…central place that the island had continually occupied in the economic, financial and cultural flows of the Mediterranean. This study, mainly based on epigraphic accounting sources, including more than five hundred accounts and engraved inventories that were displayed in the sanctuary of Apollo, but also on numismatic sources and archaeological remains on the seafront, re-considers the question of Delos place in the Hellenistic economy. Far from being an exception to be excluded from serialized comparisons, the Delian evidence is indicative of Aegean economic circumstances and demonstrates the capacities of the Greek communities to adapt to change in troubled times. Behind the numbers cut in stone appear human communities and societies whose economic activities shed fresh light on the history of this part of the Mediterranean. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Freed fromAthenian guardianship in 314 BCE, at a time of geopolitical changeswhich marked the beginnings of the Hellenistic period in the Aegeanworld, Delos gradually built up its political and economic independence. The Delian community redefined, during the third and second centuries, the central place that the island had constantly occupied in theeconomic, financial and cultural flows of the Mediterranean. This studyis mainly based on epigraphic accounting sources, including more thanfive hundred accounts and engraved inventories that were visible in thesanctuary of Apollo, but also on numismatic sources and archaeologicalremains on the seafront, in order to re-consider the question of Delos'place in the Hellenistic economy. Far from being an exception to beexcluded from serialized comparisons, the Delian documentation isindicative of Aegean economic situations and demonstrates the capacitiesof the Greek communities to adapt to change in troubled times. Behindthe figures engraved on the stone appear human communities and societieswhose economic activities shed new light on the history of this part ofthe Mediterranean.
