Grâce à André Chapelon (1892-1978) ancien élève de l'École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, ingénieur, concepteur et scientifique hors du commun, la locomotive à vapeur atteignit son plus haut sommet de puissance et de rendement, au moment même où elle se voyait supplantée par d'autres formes de puissance motrice. Bien qu'il ait été vilipendé par certains de ses collègues et que ses premiers projets aient été délibérément écartés en faveur de la traction électrique et diesel, il acquit néanmoins une incontestable réputation internationale. Dès 1972, H. C. B. Rogers lui consacra une biographie en langue anglaise. Exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi signé de l'auteur sur la page de faux-titre : "À Monsieur Gérard Eymery avec mon meilleur souvenirs des tous mes hommages". On joint : le n°33 de Science et vie de juin 1945 contenant un article d'André Chapelon sur la locomotive vapeur en France. Quelques petites taches à la toile.
