First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Formed in Troy, New York State, in 1862, the 125th saw action at Harpers Ferry, where, due to failure of leadership, it was forced to surrender. After some time under parole at Camp Douglas, they returned to battle, joining the Army of the Potomac just before the battle of Gettysburg, where their leader Colonel Willard was killed. They further fought at Bristoe Station, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, and the Appomattox Campaign, among others; mustering out in June of 1865. Simons was promoted to Chaplain in 1863, after the previous chaplain resigned for physical disability. Nevins, in Civil War Books, page 158, complains that less than half the book is narrative [much of the rest being biographical], and too much of that was published in other places. Still. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 125th New York Infantry is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. The regiment was recruited in Orange County in August 1862. After two months' service in Virginia, the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac at Harper's Ferry. Captured there, the regiment was immediately paroled and sent to a parole camp at Chicago for two months, when the men were declared exchanged and they returned to Virginia in December. It was placed in Whipple's Division, with which command it was under fire at Fredericksburg, and hotly engaged at Chancellorsville. The regiment marched on the field of Gettysburg with 290 officers and men, of whom 28 were killed, 57 wounded, and 5 missing. The regiment has erected a magnificent monument at Gettysburg, which includes a life-size marble statue of their heroic colonel. The regiment was in the front line of Hancock's celebrated charge at Spotsylvania and its diminished ranks were again decimated. The regiment also participated in both the Petersburg and Appomattox Campaigns. This very good regimental of a fighting NY regiment was written by its chaplain.
