Marbling on the text block ends has mostly faded, and the text block ends have darkened. Vol. 1: 620 pages; 38 chapters; ends of back joint appear to have been split and repaired; the front board has 4 water stains; a fourth of the back board has a stain; an owner's name is on the front pastedown; broken hinges are repaired with cloth, hinge tape; most of the bottom, front corner of the text block has water stain, which runs onto the pages, up to 3 1/2 in. Vol. 2: 660 pages; chapters 39-79; the bottom edge of the spine strip is missing; endpapers are split over the cord hinges; the last 52 pages have water stain on the bottom margins; 45 pages have water stain on the top corner; 14 pages have water stain on the inside margin; a large chip on an inside margin is repaired with document repair tape. Vol. 3: 642 pages; chapters 80-115; the cloth has 8 faded spots, up to a linear 1 3/4 in.; the broken front hinge is repaired with cloth, hinge tape; the back endpaper is split over the cord hinges; 2 pages each have a chipped corner. Gilt titles on spine with four raised bands. Leather has some scuffing and there is some edge and corner wear. Interior is lightly age-toned. Book is square and securely bound. A VG copy of Vol. 3 only. The publication date of 1861 is for the first volume of this three volume set which was issued together. This volume could not have been printed before 1865. The set is a near contemporaneous account of the Civil War. This is an excellent copy of Vol. 3. Leather spines {corded} and corners, matching cloth over boards. There is gilt lettering and decoration of the spines, boards plain. Hinges are solid on all volumes, but rubbed and worn. Head and tail of spines are rubbed, tail of third volume has chipped away with material showing. All textblock edges of the third volume are bright gilt, little wear. The third volume has slightly different color leather and cloth, different spine decoration. All corners are rubbed with board showing. Wear of board edges, some rubbing and spotting of cloth. Interior endpapers are solid, with light spotting. Interior textblocks are yellowed with age, faint early foxing of edges. Some staining bottom edges of textblock. Highly detailed full page engravings have caused some light shadowing of text opposite. Volume 1 has a small tear in back free endpaper near hinge. Frontis engravings and title pages retain protective tissues, some of the other engraving have tissues as well. No ownership or other markings, bindings remain solid.
