Paperback. Condition: Good. The bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark lady--these have been the defining, and demeaning, images of Latinos in U.S. cinema for more than a century. In this book, Charles Ram rez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping. In the first part of the book, Berg sets forth his theory of stereotyping, defines the classic stereotypes, and investigates how actors such as Ra l Julia, Rosie P rez, Jos Ferrer, Lupe V lez, and Gilbert Roland have subverted stereotypical roles. In the second part, he analyzes Hollywood's portrayal of Latinos in three genres: social problem films, John Ford westerns, and science fiction films. In the concluding section, Berg looks at Latino self-representation and anti-stereotyping in Mexican American border documentaries and in the feature films of Robert Rodr guez. He also presents an exclusive interview in which Rodr guez talks about his entire career, from Bedhead to Spy Kids, and comments on the role of a Latino filmmaker in Hollywood and how he tries to subvert the system.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Do you often feel like your life is out of your control? Are you trying to do too much at once, but don't know how to slow down? Maybe you're having trouble juggling all of the responsiblities in your life? In a world where we never seem to have enough time to get everything done, and advertisements are subliminally hawking us to buy me, Dr. Chuck Berg presents an elegant approach to living a saner and simpler life. There is a conclusive correlation, says Berg, between neck and back problems, gastrointestinal issues, and an overall weakening of the human immune system tied to chasing what we don't have and to poor coping skills. Staying well is a multi-faceted job. Unlike what TV commercials tell you, there is no single product, pill or piece of equipment that renders us whole. Dr. Berg reminds us that human beings are self-healing, self-regulating creatures that function independently of what is fashionable in the market place at any given moment. Is Your Lifestyle Killing You? helps readers reevaluate their current choices and habits so they can live fulfilling lives and follow the dreams that seemed to be out of reach. A successful chiropractor for almost 30 years, a student and teacher of integrative nutrition and now a speaker, author and executive lifestyle coach, Chuck Berg has brought his message of wellness and balance to clients as diverse as BMW North America, UBS Financial Services the International Council for Women in Real Estate and listeners of his Reclaiming Your Health radio show.…
