Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is a fair-to-good first edition 1955 Lippincott hardcover Western with some rub to corners and spine edges in a "good" complete dust jacket. Book now opens to the title page -- at least one preliminary blank is missing. "Los Angeles County Public Library"… stamped to that title page. No edge stampings, no library stickers to spine, no card holder or other lending-library attachments found -- though what may have been affixed to the now-missing blank free front endpaper we cannot know. In 1955, the librarians of L.A. County took up a "bro-dart 7-1/2 inch standard Plasti-Kleer Protective Dust Jacket Protector" on which the first line of instruction read "No cutting or altering is necessary." But Lippincott Westerns of this era weren't precisely 7-1/2 inches tall, of course. They were 7-5/8ths inches tall. So the happy librarians trimmed about 1/4-inch from bottom of jacket, removing half the line "Author of Destination Danger" from bottom of front panel, under the author's name. They then encased the jacket in this monstrosity, complete with dark brown top and bottom edgings, and GLUED THE FLAPS DOWN to the endpapers. We have laboriously freed the slightly shortened jacket and now covered it in a new, removable, polyethylene protector -- though fragments of glued-down brown paper backing remain to each pastedown, generally concealed under the flaps. This adventure of railroad dectective Greg Quist is a "suspenseful blend of murder mystery and Western fiction," sayeth the publishers. 224 pp., now reduced from $42. Jacket design by Charles Hargens (illustrator).
