Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 327 pages ; 24 cm A nice copy of a book outlining an interesting patent fight: "This was an action brought by Samuel Colt, of Hartford, Conn., the inventor of the Repeating Firearms usually known as "Revolvers" or "six shooters", against the Massachusetts Arms company, loc…ated at Chicopee, Mass., for the infringement of his patent-right, by manufacturing arms in which were embodied several of the improvements already secured by letters-patent to him. The investigation . brought out the whole history of this class of arms, and is of great interest in showing the time, labor and perseverance required in reducing suggestive ideas to a practical and useful result -- and the obstacles and impediments which had to be overcome -- before this truly American invention could be introduced to public notice.

Covers are clean and intact overall but have slight darkening, faint offsetting, chipping at head of spine, crease along spine, some creasing and bumping at edges and corners, and a few tiny stains. Binding loosened but holding. A Very Good copy. Printed court report for the trial, The State of Rhode Island vs. George W. Congdon (1883). The trial began on November 12, 1883. Congdon was charged with the murder of Christopher G. Wilcox. The report also refers to the incident as the "Warwick Cove tragedy" and gives a concise summary of the murder and the events before and after it. Wilcox, a 43-year-old farmer, and Congdon, a 25-year-old fishermen, had an ongoing dispute about who had the rightful ownership of a number of scallop shells in Old Warwick, Rhode Island. Previous to the murder, Congdon and Wilcox went to court regarding the matter, and the verdict ruled against Wilcox. On July 31, 1883, Congdon and Wilcox happened to both to be at Warwick Cove, and the two had a heated exchange. Sometime during the argument, Congdon drew his pistol and fatally shot Wilcox four times. Central to Congdon's defense is his claim that he shot Wilcox in self-defense because Wilcox was trying to strike him with an oar. The prosecutors representing the State of Rhode Island were Stephen Cooke, Jr., Frank S. Arnold, and Attorney General Samuel P. Colt. The attorneys representing Congdon were Willard Sayles and A. J. Cushing. A mistrial happened when one of the jurors was found to be unqualified. A new trial began on November 12. A "Not Guilty" plea was entered for Congdon. Much of the report contains the transcriptions of witness testimonies and cross-examinations during the trial that began on November 12. Among the witnesses were some of Wilcox's relatives, Congdon's father (also named George), and local residents of Warwick. The jury found Congdon to be guilty of manslaughter. Congdon was sentenced to twelve years in State Prison at hard labor. The Contents of the report are listed as follows: " Empanelment of Jury," "Indictment," "Opening Address" by Colt, "Testimony in Chief for State," "Opening Address for Defense" by Cushing, "Testimony for Defense," "Testimony for State, In Rebuttal," "Closing Argument for Defense" by Sayles, "Closing Argument for State" by Colt, "Charge to the Jury" by Justice John H. Stiness, "Justice Supreme Court," and "Verdict, Guilty of Manslaughter.".

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. 157 pages. Cloth covered spine with the balance in pictorial paper. Rough cut page edges. Hardcover published without a dust jacket. "Sam Colt's Own Record of Transactions with Captain Walker and Eli Whitney, Jr. in 1847" compiles historical correspondence documenting the creatio…n of the Colt Walker revolver. This collection details how a vital 1847 military contract saved Samuel Colt from bankruptcy, highlighting the collaboration with Capt. Samuel Walker and production challenges managed by Eli Whitney, Jr. The correspondence published in this volume completes the account of the manufacture in 1847 of the Walker model of the Colt revolver at Whitneyville, Connecticut. Chronologically presented, the sory tells itself. The letters and documents come from Samuel Colt's own file, preserved by Mrs. Colt after his death, and presented to The Connecticut Hiistorical Society in 1915 by Charles E. Gross, one of her executors. Where Eli Whitney,Jr. or Samuel H. Walker were the writers, the documents are, except in the few instances noted, the originals; the letters of which Colt was the author are either drafts or copies in his own hand and intended for his own record. In each case the orthography of the writer has been retained, and interlined notes, superscriptions and endorsements (the latter in Colt's handwritin) are given whereever found. Former owner's neat signature and date on the inside front board. The top front and back corners are somewhat bumped. The inside is clean and bright and the binding is solid. Overall this is a Near Fine copy with moderate use.
