Boards mildly bowed, but sharp… and bright. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Any doubt that Ramsgate is a Dickens country will be quickly dispelled by reading this tale. While probably written by Dickens while he was at the nearby Broadstairs, Dickens clearly visited Ramsgate for his inspiration. Large format, oblong, 8vo. Cullen, Walter (illustrator).

Signed by the illustrator. Slipcase has an attractive wrap around paper label fixed on the outside. The book is bound in calf skin leather on the spine with a…n indented area for the handsome black and gold title label, which is made of skiver leather and is inset. The leather wraps around to the cover boards, which have twelve drawings on the front and back. Issued without a jacket, this is in great if not perfect condition; the spine leather is a little scuffed. Attractive full page colour illustrations, and chapter vignettes, by Raymond F. Houlihan, who has signed this copy on the limitation page at the back of the book. This is copy number 1260 of 2000 subscription only copies. A most desirable issue from this wonderful small American press, where books were produced to a standard, not down to a price. Facsimile of Dickens' "letter", which is actually comprised of portions from 2 letters Dickens sent Menken [cf. LETTERS, v. 11]. Cuts as head- tailpieces. Sq 12mo. 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" Dickens knew Menken through her 1864 performances at Astley's, during which t…ime she was accepted by the London Bohemian crowd, holding 'literary salons' at her suite at the Westminster Palace Hotel. Her aspirations toward literature resulted in this modest volume of poetry, which she decicated to "Charles Dickens", a gesture the Inimitable accepted with 'great pleasure'. This particular copy comes from a prominent Detroit businessman's collection, gathered in the 1920s, and only now, 100 years later, coming onto the market. Spine sunned to a mellow golden tan. A handsome VG+ copy. Early 20th C. 3/4 green morocco binding with marbled paper boards & eps. TEG. Original publisher's green cloth binding bound-in at rear 1st edition thus (Gimbel B295), i.e., with the lithographic plate reproducing Dicken's letter. This copy SIGNED by Dickens, in blue ink, on the original ffep, "Faithfully yours / Charles Dickens [flourish]". We posit it was signed by Dickens during his 1868 tour of America.

Some weakness to the leather at the hinges requires careful handling, but both boards remain entirely attached (but someday this will be the weakness). Marbled endpapers. Binding good and tight. Text block clean and tight and square. Engraved title page dated 1837 detached but present in the correct location. Printed title page also dated 1837. 41 engraved plates, extra illustrated with 22 more plates. All First-Issue Points present except signature E is present on page 25. This is a famously complicated first edition to identify. This copy has a note from a previous bookseller (likely close to 100 years ago), The Halle Bros. Co, detailing 42 textual variants, typos, etc. This copy sold by Halle Bros in the last century and again through Hindman Auctions in 2021. Original handwritten letter from Dickens, with envelope. The envelope is taped to the blank side of the front endpaper. It is addressed in Dickens hand and postmarked Feb 1870, with stamp. The original letter is a folded sheet of stationery with Dickens Gads Hill Place address printed on it. Power blue paper, folded in thirds. 27 lines in Dickens hand, plus bold signature and dates, etc. There are 3 strips of tape, yellowed, at the top and bottom of both the envelope and stationery page. 5 Hyde Park Place Saturday Night, February 1870 Dear Miss Huffam, I was more amazed than displeased, I beg to assure you, by finding that your friends has used my name without my knowledge. I received a letter from [?] Hurt and Rockwell of Bond Street, in- forming me that they had had the pleasure of voting for my case. I [ ? ] replied, that could not be, for I had no case. They then gave me your name. Not having the faintest idea that you were a candidate, I supposed them where fuller [?] [?] [?] touching your elder sister; and said so. Upon which they explained in detail. I was very careful to tell [next page] them immediately that there could be no question of the merits of your case, and that I knew it was a meritorious one. I mentioned this in a general way to my sister, but would on no account have done so with the least intention of making you unhappy. Faithfully yours Charles Dickens Miss Loretta Huffam Charles Dickens middle name was Huffam, so it seems likely that there is a family connection here. Many volumes have 3 plates at the front (higher numbers have only two), one of which is beautifully hand colored. Illustrated throughout with the original illustrations, with tissue guards. The set is: The Pickwick Papers (2 volumes); Sketches by Boz; Oliver Twist; Nicholas Nickleby (2 volumes); Old Curiosity Shop; Barnaby Rudge (2 volumes); Martin Chuzzlewit (2 volumes); Dombey and Son (2 volumes); David Copperfield (2 volumes); Bleak House (2 volumes); Little Dorrit (2 volumes); A Tale of Two Cities; Our Mutual Friend (2 volumes); Christmas Books (2 volumes); Hard Times; Uncommercial Traveller; Plays, Poems, Miscellanies; A Child's History of England; Life, Letters, Speeched (2 volumes); The Dickens Dictionary. 2 volumes have small chips (nickel sized) on the crown of the spine where a piece of the leather is missing, and 4 others are cracked there, and the leather needs repair. 2 volumes have front cover detached (Volume 1 & the Christmas Books volume). Both covers are present. No other significant damage, but there is some wear to hinges and darkening to the leather corners throughout. A handsome set on 2 full shelves, notwithstanding the small chips mentioned above. Laid in at the front of the first volume, there is a check filled and signed by Dickens. Drawn on the bank of Messers Coutts & Compy. to 'messrs Dawson, Newman & Co.' in the amount of Thirty one pounds, six shillings and fourpence. Signed by Dickens and vigorously underlined, as was his style. Dated 'Second February, 1866.' The check is on blue paper, embossed with a 'One Penny' crowned stamp. It is struck through with blue ink. Mounted edgeways in white paper such that both sides are visible. Measures 7.5 x 3.75 inches. Endpaper and three blanks are detached on this volume. The page with the check is the first page attached. All the missing pages and board are here, however. Please email with questions or to request photos.
