He has much to write about the great gunsmiths, their super-accurate products. and the rugged individuals who cherished and depended upon them. The term "plains rifle" is utilized because it is popular with collectors today and it is a good all inclusive type name. In the fur-trade days, a first-class trapper's rifle was a Hawken; and it was generally referred to then as a "mountain rifle." The field of this book has been broadened to include all rifles which might have been made with the plainsman in mind. Pistols have been included because they were so much an integral part of the trapper's equipment, and because they wee so often actual by-products of the riflesmith's business. Shotguns are touched upon because their use as auxiliary rifleman's weapons has been so sadly ignored and for the reason that they were sold by so many makers of plains rifles.
