Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A particularly handsome anthology of eight supernatural tales selected and illustrated by acclaimed British artist Charles Keeping (1924-1988). The collection brings together Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body Snatchers," Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat," Washington Irving's "The Adventures of the German Student," Oscar Wilde's "The Canterville Ghost," Daphne du Maurier's "Escort," M. R. James' "Wailing Well," A. M. Burrage's "The Sweeper," and Charles Dickens' "The Signalman." Keeping supplies atmospheric black-and-white illustrations throughout, ranging from tightly rendered narrative drawings to much more expressionistic images in which figures seem to emerge from overlapping lines, shadows, and washes. The combination is unusually effective: this is as much a Charles Keeping illustrated book as it is a ghost-story anthology. The bibliographic record confirms 142 pages for this American edition. The copyright page explicitly states "First American edition published in 1986 by Peter Bedrick Books", while also recording the book's first publication in Britain that same year by Blackie and Son Ltd. The British hardcover carries a different ISBN, confirming that this copy is the distinct American issue rather than simply an imported British copy. The original jacket retains the $14.95 FPT price and notes U.S. distribution by Harper & Row. Bound in deep blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Condition: Near Fine / Very Good+ dust jacket. Book is clean, square and firmly bound, with attractive blue cloth and bright gilt; interior pages appear exceptionally clean with no ownership markings. Original dust jacket is complete and unclipped, with light shelf rubbing and modest edge/corner wear, including slight wear and a tiny nick/crease around the upper spine area. Overall an especially attractive copy, with the striking Keeping jacket artwork retaining strong color. Charles Keeping was one of Britain's major postwar illustrators, twice winning the Kate Greenaway Medal, and his work extended well beyond children's picture books to major literary illustration, including the complete Dickens for the Folio Society. His lithographs also entered institutional collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum. This book appeared quite late in Keeping's career - only two years before his death in 1988 - and it is especially well suited to his darker graphic vocabulary. The jacket is not merely packaging: Keeping's moonlit blue-black woodland continues across the front, spine and rear panel, making the complete jacket an important part of the book's visual conception. The interior illustrations likewise demonstrate why Keeping was such a distinctive interpreter of unsettling literature; rather than simply depicting climactic scenes, several images use distortion, overlapping line and darkness to create psychological unease. A particularly atmospheric illustrated collection for autumn and Halloween reading. Charles Keeping (illustrator).…
