Hardcover. Condition: Fine. One of 250 copies, signed by Beckett. Oversized folio. 36 pp. Illustrated with seven full-page intaglio prints by Charles Klabunde, all of which are numbered, titled, and signed by the artist. Klabunde used a combination of etching, engraving, and rouletting on large copper plates to produce these images of existential realism. According to the artist, his works of the grotesque are intended to "giv[e] shape and form to the demonic and angelic images that lie within the shadowland of our living essence; the unknown anxiety of despair and meaninglessness in the face of our non-being." This was the first book issued by The New Overbrook Press, the proprietor of which, Charles Altschul, was the grandson of Frank Altschul, creator of the Overbrook Press. The text was translated into English by Beckett himself from his original 1970 version of the book, Le DÃ peupleur. Loose, as issued, in original cloth folding case with blindstamped circle motif on both covers. Small abrasion to upper rear corner, else fine.

The first and only publication of the New Overbrook Press, a reissue of Beckett's short story about a place "where lost bodies roam each searching for its lost one" that was first published in English with translation by Beckett in 1972. Certain alterations to the text were made at Beckett's request making this the "definitive version" per the publisher's prospectus, a copy of which is laid in. Folio unbound, folded sheets printed on mouldmade Rives BFK with Gills Sans typeface "designed by Eric Gill in 1927 to complement the signage still in use in the London Underground"; 36 pages. Illustrated with 7 fabulous intaglio prints, EACH ONE SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY KLABUNDE. Housed in gilt-lettered, tan cloth-covered clamshell box with circle design stamped in blind. The box is a little worn at corners, unevenly darkened, and somewhat soiled, therefore good only or perhaps a little better. Contents are quite fine.
