Monot was a medical doctor and mayor of Moux then of Montsauche (Nià vre). He denounced the high mortality rate of children placed in his district [canton] and attacked the practice of the 'on-…site' wet-nurse, criticizing women who out of greed, came to Paris and abandon their own children (victims of neglect, malpropriety, unsanitary housing, exploitation and trafficking to which the children are subject â" preface). In this 1872 pamphlet he wrote a remarkable study on the excessive mortality of children during the first year of existence, their causes and ways to restrict their mortality. That study was given to the Societe Protectrice de L'Enfance [Society for the Protection of Children]. / An ink manuscript note on the cover-title references the scourge of syphilis and the fetus, addressed on page 16. On that page is an additional marginal note showing that a previous owner was highlighting this passage, writing "Abortus syphiliticus". Monot writes that a child with syphilitic poison will suffer in fertilization and can be born with cutaneous or visceral syphilis, and "destined to soon perish due to the syphilitic diathesis that comes with it." Edition originale de cette étude pionnière qui met en lumière le lien entre la mise en nourrice et la surmortalité infantile. "Ce mémoire… est l'oeuvre du Docteur Monot, médecin du canton de Montsauche dans la Nièvre. Il décrit le vide laissé dans les villages par le départ des femmes venues se placer comme nourrice à domicile à Paris. Entre 1858 et 1864 sur les 2 884 femmes ayant accouché dans les 10 communes du canton, 1897 d'entre elle, soit les deux tiers, ont émigré. Le Docteur Monot évoque la mort massive des enfants nouveaux-nés laissés par leur mère. Le sort des « Petits Paris », ces nouveaux-nés de Paris mis en nourrice dans le canton, est encore pire : leur taux de mortalité atteint 71% pendant la première année de leur existence. Alors que le taux de mortalité infantile pour l'ensemble de la France en 1865 est de 17,9%. Les médecins et les moralistes s'emparent de cette question et critiquent la mise en nourrice. Le mémoire du Docteur Monot va susciter un long débat (dix séances) à l'Académie de médecine.
