Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Steinacker, Charles (photographs); Karlen, Arno (text). Superior: Portrait of a Living Lake. Foreword by Senator Gaylord Nelson. New York, Evanston & London: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1970. First Edition. Large-format hardcover in dust jacket. Printed and bound in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi. LC 74-123962. First edition of this striking large-format photographic tribute to Lake Superior, featuring approximately 70 rich color plates by Charles Steinacker, with historical texts compiled and edited by journalist Arno Karlen. The volume blends landscape photography with excerpts from explorers' journals (1650-1880), including material from Camille Ferri Pisani's writings, presenting Superior as both wilderness and environmental symbol. The foreword by Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day. places the book squarely within the emerging conservation movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. An especially interesting publishing detail appears on the front jacket flap: the printed price reads '$22.50 (until 12/31/70)' at the top, with '$25.00' at the bottom. This transitional dual-price state reflects a scheduled post-publication price increase and is an appealing bibliographic point for collectors of environmental and Harper & Row first editions. A beautifully produced oversized volume printed in Italy on high-quality stock, combining documentary, historical, and environmental perspectives at a pivotal moment in American conservation history. Charles Steinacker (b.1937) was an American photographer known for his environmental and landscape work, with images appearing in major national publications. His photography in this volume captures Lake Superior's shifting moods and elemental grandeur at a time when ecological awareness was entering mainstream American discourse. Arno Karlen (1927-2014) was a respected journalist and editor, formerly with Holiday and later Newsweek. He authored numerous works on science, medicine, and environmental topics, bringing a literary and documentary sensibility to this compilation.
