"Dopo essere stato precettore dei fi…gli di Carlo Alberto, il 20 gennaio 1834 fu nominato vescovo di Pinerolo; consacrato vescovo il successivo 9 marzo, prese possesso della diocesi il 31 marzo. Un terzo della popolazione della sua diocesi era allora valdese e monsignor Charvaz si confrontò con questa realtà [.], predicò la conversione dei valdesi al cattolicesimo fondando, tra l'altro, a Torre Pellice il Priorato dell'Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro. Nel 1844 nella cattedrale di San Donato accolse solennemente la conversione di ventiquattro valdesi".

Sacerdote e teologo originario di Hautecour in Savoia, Charvaz fu precettore dei figli di Carlo Alberto e divenne, al termine dell'incarico nel 1834, vescovo di Pinero…lo; in questa diocesi sviluppò una posizione radicalmente antivaldese, talmente intransigente da attirare, secondo alcuni (v. Guichonnet, in DBI), le simpatie del liberalismo italiano e dei protestanti europei, accelerando il processo che portò all'emancipazione dei valdesi (1848). Il proselitismo contro i seguaci di Valdo è all'origine di molte lettere pastorali dello Charvaz così come di questo corposo catechismo in cinque volumi, dapprima pubblicato in francese (Guide du catéchumène vaudois ou cours d'introductions destinés à lui faire comprendre la vérité de la religion catholique, 1840-1850) e quindi tradotto e quasi raddoppiato dall'autore per questa edizione torinese. Firma di proprietà, buon esemplare.
