Oblong quarto, [90] leaves (printed rectos only) of designs and commercial art, with 10 leaves in monochrome and 25 in two or more colours. Black textured cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth slightly worn at the extremities, with a small amount of white paint at the head of the front joint; rear hinge pulled a little, but sound; tears to (mainly the bottom) edges of about 30 leaves, with eight of those tears above a centimetre long now expertly sealed; minor loss to the top edge of one leaf; a few other mild signs of age and use; a very good copy. The lengthy subtitle is worth quoting in full: 'A bewildering collection of Modern Ornamental art bristling with new and up-to-date ideas and designs of every conceivable nature. An invaluable art gem especially adapted to the requirements of the Sign Painter, Show Card Writer and Commercial Artist. Containing in all, air brush designs, show cards, business cards, letter heads, sign ends, ribbons, scrolls, panels, book covers, hanging signs, theatrical designs. Also thirty-three pages of ornamental work (in colors) along with nine brand new alphabets'.

      Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition, "Copyright 1910, Detroit School of Lettering, Detroit, Mich." to the title page. Oblong format. Very gently read. Page numbers appear to be hand written in fountain pen. Previous owner's neat name and address and two tiny ink droplets to the ffep. Odd finger smudge and light soling to show, otherwise the interior is clean and free of any writing. Last two pages have neatly pulled away just at the staples at the spine but are still firmly attached. Black leatherette boards (hardcover) are lightly bumped and rubbed to extremities, minor shelfwear to show. 1.5cm x 1cm dark stain near the fore-edge of the front board. Bright gilt titles over a blindstamped "label" to the upper front board. Fabulous assortment of colour and B & W illustrations regarding scrolls, panels, air brush design, letter head, book covers, nine new alphabets, etc. etc. The senior Strong founded the Detroit School of Lettering. By the Author (illustrator).
