Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. This is a short guidebook to the Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick written by the architect Philip B. Chatwin. No date is apparent on the volume, but it was found together with a number of other such guidebooks which all appear to have been from a trip to England, some of which bear the date 1935, so it likely is of a similar date. The Collegiate Church of St. Mary in Warwick was built on foundations dating back to 1123, however the only suriving part of this original church is the crypt. Parts were extensively rebuilt by Thomas Beauchamp in the fourteenth century. Amongst others, one notable figure buried in the chancel is William Parr, first Marquess of Northampton and brother of the queen consort Catherine Parr. The church was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of Warwick, and extensively rebuilt in 1704 in a Gothic design. The guidebook was written by Philip B. Chatwin, F.S.A. (1873-1964), an architect who specialised in the repare of churches. He was also a devoted antiquarian and Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, and was appointed OBE in 1953 for his archaeological work for the Ministry of Works. He researched and wrote extensively on St Mary's Church. This book is in excellent condition. There is some slight staining to the front cover, but it is very faint. Internally the book is pristine.
