Pra Law [Lilit Phra Law] is a Thai narrative poem probably dating to the 15th or 16th century, recounting the life and adventures of the mythical Pra Law, the heroic, handsome son of a king, who falls in love with the daughters of a ruler of a rival kingdom. The present, much abbreviated (and sanitized) translation and adaptation for the Western stage is believed by the author to be the first English version. The Thai epic folk poem, Khun Chang Khun Phan, a romantic adventure, has had input over the centuries by various illustrious poets, including Sunthorn Phu as well as several members of Thai royalty. Its origins, however may date back to the medieval Ayutthaya period, and was also possibly based on actual lives. It remains immensely popular to the present day.
