Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Almost as new oversized paperback. No Marks, no creases. Wear at spine ends. A contemporary story of adventure, history, and identity by acclaimed author Amitav Ghosh. Off the easternmost corner of India, in the Bay of Bengal, lies the immense labyrinth of tiny islands known as the Sundarbans, w…here settlers live in fear of drowning tides and man-eating tigers. Piya Roy, a young American marine biologist of Indian descent, arrives in this lush, treacherous landscape in search of a rare species of river dolphin and enlists the aid of a local fisherman and a translator. Together the three of them launch into the elaborate backwaters, drawn unawares into the powerful political undercurrents of this isolated corner of the world that exact a personal toll as fierce as the tides. Celui où fut posé, en 1942, la nécessité d'élaborer une Histoire naturelle de la folie inséparable d'une conception forte de la Liberté, en un temps où celle-ci était bafouée, et où les malades int…ernés vivaient une détresse amplifiée. Dramatis Personae. Research Notes and Bibliography. Notes. Index. Neal Bascomb (born 1971) is an American journalist and author. He is known f…or his books on history. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Miami University with a B.A. in Economics and English Literature. After graduation, he worked as a journalist in London, Paris, and Dublin. He was an editor for St. Martin's Press, and in 2000, he began writing books full-time. His books have ranked on a number of bestseller lists, been optioned for film, and been published in over 15 countries. He has contributed to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. The Russian battleship Potemkin was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. She became famous during the Revolution of 1905, when her crew mutinied against their officers. On 27 June 1905, Potemkin was at gunnery practice near Tendra Spit off the Ukrainian coast. The uprising was triggered when Ippolit Giliarovsky, the ship's second in command, allegedly threatened to shoot crew members. Giliarovsky was killed after he mortally wounded Grigory Vakulinchuk, one of the mutiny's leaders. The mutineers killed seven of the Potemkin's eighteen officers, including Captain Evgeny Golikov, Executive Officer Giliarovsky and Surgeon Smirnov; and captured the accompanying torpedo boat Ismail (No. 267). They organized a ship's committee of 25 sailors, led by Afanasi Matushenko, to run the battleship. The true story of the deadliest naval mutiny in history. In 1905, after being served rancid meat, more than seven hundred Russian sailors mutinied against their officers aboard what was then one of the most powerful battleships in the world. Theirs was a life barely worth living -- a life of hard labor and bitter oppression, an existence, in its hopelessness and injustice, not unlike that of most of the working class in Russia at the time. Certainly their rebellion came as no surprise. Still, against any reasonable odds of success, the sailors-turned-revolutionaries, led by the charismatic firebrand Matyushenko, risked their lives to take control of the ship and fly the red flag of revolution. What followed was a violent port-to-port chase that spanned eleven harrowing days and came to symbolize the Russian revolution itself. A pulse-quickening story that alternates between the opulent court of Nicholas II and the razor's-edge tension aboard the Potemkin, Red Mutiny is a tale threaded with terrific adventure, epic naval battles, heroic sacrifices, treachery, bloodlust, and a rallying cry of freedom that would steer the course of the twentieth century. It is also a fine work of scholarship that draws for the first time on the Soviet archives to shed new light on this seminal event in Russian and naval history. For readers of Tom Clancy's Hunt for Red October and Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea, Neal Bascomb's gripping adventure at sea is the story of courage, the power of ideas, and the fragile nature of alliance. Jacques Chazaud (Map) (illustrator).

Fine unread condition forest green boards, brown spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Paul Theroux; Author Dedication and Preliminary Page Quotes. Illust…rated with black-and-white maps. "Following the success of the acclaimed Ghost Train to the Eastern Star and The Great Railway Bazaar, The Last Train to Zona Verde is an ode to the last African journey of the world's most celebrated travel writer. "Happy again, back in the kingdom of light," writes Paul Theroux as he sets out on a new journey through the continent he knows and loves best. Theroux first came to Africa as a twenty -two-year-old Peace Corps volunteer, and the pull of the vast land never left him. Now he returns, after fifty years on the road, to explore the little-traveled territory of western Africa and to take stock both of the place and of himself. His odyssey takes him northward from Cape Town, through South Africa and Namibia, then on into Angola, wishing to head farther still until he reaches the end of the line. Journeying alone through the greenest continent, Theroux encounters a world increasingly removed from both the itineraries of tourists and the hopes of post-colonial independence movements. Leaving the Cape Town townships, traversing the Nambibian bush, passing the browsing cattle of the great sunbaked heartland of the savanna, Theroux crosses "the Red Line" into a different Africa: "the improvised, slapped-together Africa of tumbled fences and cooking fires, of mud and thatch," of heat and poverty, and of roadblocks, mobs, and anarchy. After 2,500 arduous miles, he comes to the end of his journey in more ways than one, a decision he chronicles with typically unsparing honesty in a chapter called "What Am I Doing Here?" Vivid, witty, and beautifully evocative, The Last Train to Zona Verde is a fitting final African adventure from the writer whose gimlet eye and effortless prose have brought the world to generations of readers." - from the inner front jacket flap. Moore, Brian (book design); Chazaud, Jacques (maps); Gall, John (jacket design); Un-anongrak, Yingyong (author photograph) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xix, [3], 533, [3] pages. Frontis illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. DJ has some wear and soiling. Brooks Donohue Simpson (born August 4, 1957) is an American historian and an ASU Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University, sp…ecializing in studies of the American Civil War. After working three years as an assistant editor for The Papers of Andrew Johnson, based at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Simpson joined the faculty at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1987. Three years later, in 1990, he migrated west to Arizona State University, where he presently teaches. Simpson is the author of six books, the coauthor of two more, and the editor or coeditor of eight other books. He is perhaps best known for his work on Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant: Triumph over Adversity, 1822-1865, published by Houghton Mifflin in 2000, was a New York Times Notable Book and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for that year. Derived from a Kirkus review: The superb first installment in a planned two-volume biography of the greatest Northern general of the Civil War-and one of the most remarkable military figures of all time. Simpson is an oft-published authority on the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Here he takes on the case of U.S. Grant, whose unlikely rise from West Point-trained failed businessman to the pinnacle of military power is one of the most extraordinary success stories in American history. Appropriately enough, roughly 80 per cent of the volume concerns Grant's military career, from his service in the Mexican War through his triumph at Appomattox. But the distinctive value of Simpson's work is that he does not slight Grant's personal life, especially his fraught relationships with his father and slaveholding father-in-law and his marriage to Julia Dent Grant. Simpson is unfailingly balanced and judicious in his assessments of military decisions, battles, and politics. He does not shy away from Grant's tactical errors or the never-stilled rumors of his excessive drinking. Grant's life is more fully realized in this work than in previous studies. Jacques Chazaud (Maps) (illustrator).
