Used condition, good only, unevenly folded with pencil notes, some spotting, old tape discolouration to edges, closed tears and minor loss. Very rare, with Worldcat recording single copies of 3 later editions only (1969, 1970, 1973). None on Jisc. This map was first published in Aug 1963, when major new offshore discoveries made the need for resolution of international boundaries in the Gulf more urgent. This updated edition tracks progress up to 17 Oct 1966. // SAUDI-IRAN: the Hiran photo-mapping Survey on the islands (1965) referred in the title signalled warming bilateral relations. In 1966, King Faisal and the Shah exchanged state visits, which led to peaceful resolution in 1968 with Al-Arabiyah ceded to Saudi Arabia, Al Farsiyah to Iran, and agreement on offshore boundaries. The islands are shown here pre-agreement. // NEUTRAL ZONE: the "Petmin Line" is shown extending from its southern limit into the Gulf, north of which is the Khafji offshore field shared between Saudi and Kuwait. Both countries had agreed as of 25 July 1966 to divide the Neutral Zone while continuing to share new discoveries within it and offshore. The Petmin Line may be the Saudi Government and Aramco's interpretation of where the unconfirmed maritime border should be. // BAHRAIN-SAUDI: the map shows the border that had been agreed on 22 Feb 1958. Abu Safah is marked to its west, where Aramco made a major discovery in 1963 and began production in 1966. Under the 1958 Agreement, Saudi Arabia was entitled to exploit the area but obliged to share its net revenues with Bahrain 50:50. // QATAR-SAUDI: at this time it must have looked as if resolution would be reached soon, as on 4 Dec 1965 both agreed to divide the Dawhat Salwah equally, and engage an international survey company to draw the land border, but this remained unresolved until 2001. // BAHRAIN-WESTERN QATAR: shown in detail with fields, settlements and routes. However, ongoing territorial disputes meant their boundary remained unresolved until 2001. // INLAND: the map extends to Dahna Sands and beyond including the Khurais Field discovered in 1963. Features include settlements, various roads, dug wells, sabkhah, reefs, intermittent streams, wells (oil, gas, water injection, abandoned), gas-oil separation plant, trig stations, pipelines and power lines. Pencil marks circle several locations on the Saudi coast from Ras as Saffaniyah to Haradh, with an arrow "To Rub al Kali".
