Binding substantially weakened, almost broken. Partially age-typical paper darkening with water stains throughout. Text block nonetheless well-preserved. Condition: Good. in-4 (222 x 153 mm), pp. (40), 1108, (24) con fregio xilografico al frontespizio, alcune testatine e iniziali ornate. Legatura coeva con piatti in bazzana, tagli a spruzzo rosso (con difetti e mancanze al dorso e alle cerniere: il dorso, mancante di porzioni di pelle, è stato ridipinto della stessa tonalità dei piatti e, con il titolo in oro conservato e le corde dei nervi a vista, risulta comunque gradevole). Jacques de Chevanes (1608?1678) fu monaco francese dell'ordine dei Cappuccini. Nei suoi scritti adoperò spesso lo pseudonimo di Jacques d'Autun e Saint-Agran, e tra le sue opere questa è di certo la più interessante e importante. Fu compilata in risposta a Gabriel Naude e alla sua "Apologie pour tous les grands personnages, qui ont été faussement soupçonnés de magie", collocandosi a metà strada tra scetticismo e credulità, dando particolare risalto al tema da un punto di vista legale, ma con interessanti e lunghe digressioni su temi quali l'astrologia, angeli e demoni, la magia e la stregoneria. Chevanes sostiene che gli stregoni sono pochi e che la loro redenzione è sia possibile che preferibile alla loro esecuzione giudiziaria. Include un interessante colloquio con una donna accusata di stregoneria, in seguito alla caccia alle streghe avvenuta in Borgogna tra il 1648 ed il 1649, a cui lo stesso Autore prese parte. Prima edizione, secondo Caillet "un traité de démonologie devenu introuvable". Esemplare discreto,  usuali fioriture della carta, un forellino di tarlo interessa il margine interno di circa 150 fogli nella parte centrale del volume, intaccando marginalmente alcune lettere di testo.  Caillet I, 347.
