April 1944 in Yan'an (Yenan) als eine Landreformoper uraufgeführt, 1945 erstmals publiziert und 1952 mit dem Stalin-Preis bedacht. Die volkstümliche Musiklinie schuf der Student Zhang Lu des verantwortlichen Teams. "Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Mädchens Xi'er, das vor der Unterdrückung durch den Großgrundbesitzer ins Gebirge geflohen ist und wegen des langjährigen Höhlenlebens an Leukozytose litt. Xi'er wurde schließlich von der Volksbefreiungsarmee gerettet - und ihre Krankheit selbstverständlich geheilt" (China Radio International online am 11.10.2005). 1950 erfolgte eine Verfilmung, 1974 eine Neuverfilmung.
